4 great ways to sustainably feed your skin

Healthy, glowing skin starts from within. It’s one of those phrases that a lot of us have heard time and time again – but what does it actually mean? Simply put, it’s all about diet. From reducing acne and premature ageing to creating a clearer, brighter complexion, what you eat really can transform your appearance. If you’re suffering from skin issues, changing your diet could be the key to fixing them! You can also eat your way to beautiful skin sustainably, helping the planet whilst you fight spots and get that glow.

To help you start eating with your skin in mind, our experts at AP Skincare have put together their top diet tips to work alongside skincare treatments and improve your complexion.

1. Remove dairy from your diet

If you suffer from acne, dairy might not be helping. Cow’s milk contains a hormone – the catchily-named IGF-1 – that’s been linked to causing acne, and it could be making your outbreaks worse. To work out whether or not dairy is to blame, try cutting out all dairy products from your diet for a few weeks. Not only could you help banish painful acne for good, but you’ll also be helping to save the planet. A dairy-free diet has a much lower carbon footprint than one that’s full of milk, cheese, and chocolate, allowing you to reduce your impact on the world one meal at a time.

2. Reduce inflammation with prebiotics

Your gut and your skin are closely connected, and if one’s not quite right, then it’s likely that the other won’t be either. Excess oils, redness, and a dull complexion can all be caused by problems in your gut, as well as more serious skin issues like eczema and dermatitis. Try taking an oral probiotic if your skin isn’t as happy as you’d like it to be, and you might just bring back balance.

3. Eat more tomatoes to reduce wrinkles

If you’re trying to keep pesky wrinkles and loss of elasticity at bay, start with your diet. You should fill your meals with foods that are chock-full of antioxidants, like tomatoes. Tomatoes contain one antioxidant in particular – lycopene – that’s extraordinarily good at protecting your skin against sun damage, which is the leading cause of premature ageing. Alongside this UV protection, they’re also packed with beta carotene and lutein which help to  fight the formation of wrinkles.

4. Increase collagen with bell peppers

As we age, our bodies start producing less and less collagen, which causes sagging skin, wrinkles, and a general loss of elasticity. In other words, it ages us. To prevent this, increase your intake of foods that contain vitamin C, like bell peppers. Vitamin C is one of the essential building blocks of collagen and just one cup of chopped pepper will give you 211% of your daily recommended value.
