6 Dos and Don’ts for your Halloween makeup

It’s a scary time of year for your skin. For starters, sweets are always a big part of Halloween, and they can bring their own risks for your skin. An even bigger risk though, can come from Halloween face paint, which is often underestimated in how much it can damage your skin, both during and after its application. Luckily, we’re on hand with the essential dos and don’ts, so you can look just as amazing when the scary stuff is over!

Three key things to avoid for your skin

DON’T buy your Halloween makeup from a costume shop

Makeup from costume shops has a big draw for most people in that it’s cheap and convenient to buy, as well as usually being pretty easy to apply. Don’t forget, though, that these products are not manufactured with quality in mind. It might not be such a huge surprise to learn that costume shops usually aren’t that concerned for your skin! Above all, their priority is on reducing cost, which usually means using the cheapest ingredients that aren’t necessarily the best for your skin.

These makeup products are almost always heavier, thicker and more artificial, and can easily cause breakouts of spots. In the worst case scenarios, they can even cause severe allergic reactions. Trust us, you’re better off without. Instead, you should buy your ingredients from cosmetics shops, which are far more likely to have your welfare in mind.

DON’T forget to check the labels!

Even if you are buying from a licensed cosmetics shop, don’t forget that the usual rules still apply. Take care to check the labels for any allergens or other undesirable ingredients which could potentially cause you issues, especially if you’re aware of particular ingredients that can cause you allergic reactions. Also, bear in mind that even these sorts of cosmetics can still cause acne and other skin problems, so it’s best to do a bit of research on them in advance.

DON’T go to bed without washing it off

You’ll already know how much of a cardinal sin it is to go to bed without removing your makeup. That goes double for Halloween face paint! Leaving it on greatly increases your chances of a breakout, as well as making it far more difficult to remove in the morning, increasing the chances of it staining your skin. Plus, in the meantime, you’ve run the even bigger risk of it staining your pillow (or even your partner!).

And here’s the list of what not to forget…

DO wear a primer

A good primer is useful for more than just getting your foundation to last all day long. Applying facepaint on Halloween often involves putting it on your face in much greater quantities than you would usually, so a barrier cream is one of the best ways to ensure you’re protected from the worst effects of it. Similarly, if it’s a particularly bright or garish colour (witches, we’re looking at you!), you’ll find that it’s one of the best ways to avoid the paint from staining your skin after you take it all off again.

DO remove it carefully

As we’ve hopefully made clear already, there’s almost no point in doing it if you’re not able to do it properly, so remember to set some time aside before you go to bed. Gentle cleanser and warm water is generally the thing to use for best results, and follow it up by using a toner. This might even mean leaving the party half an hour earlier or so. Yes, we know – we love a good party as much as anyone here at AP Skincare, but it’s not worth damaging your skin for!

DO exfoliate the next day

A gentle exfoliating scrub when you wake up the next day helps you get all fresh and ready for the day ahead. It the double advantage of helping remove any additional paint, while giving your skin the benefits of normal exfoliation in the process. This is especially good given the oil-based nature of most paints, as the exfoliating scrub targets deep into your pores to clean them out and exfoliate that oil entirely, leaving you ready for the day ahead.

Following these tips should give your skin decent protection, so you can enjoy your spook-tacular parties with perfect peace of mind.
