Simple, Easy Ways To Protect Your Skin This Summer
With the weather rapidly hotting up, we thought it was worth another quick article on some easy ways to protect your skin this summer. We talked last week on the best ways to maximise your protection from sunscreen, but there’s a bit more you can do to properly look after your skin.
Damage To Your Skin Isn’t Always Obvious
This is something we’ve all been told at some point, but quite a lot of us forget: it’s easy to get burned even on a cloudy day. You see, sun rays are sneakier than we all give them credit for – they can bounce off water and rocks, and penetrate windows and windshields with very little effort at all. That’s how you can sometimes end up in that odd scenario of feeling like you’ve been burnt, even when you’ve not left the house all day!
Now that the summer’s starting in earnest, always stay on the safe side by applying sunscreen when you go out. We went into detail on the best ways to maximise your protection last week, but remember your protection only lasts around two hours! A handy way to remember it is to set a two-hour playlist on your music or speakers. When the music finishes, it’s time to top up.
Appropriate Clothing Is Your Best Defence
Apart from being something your mother used to say a lot when you were a teenager, this is actually one of the most important bits of advice we have to give. When you’re out in the sun, always wear suitable clothing, and don’t forget to spend a bit of time in the shade when the sun’s at its hottest (between 10am and 4pm). Wide brimmed hats and long-sleeved tops are often popular choices for clothing items that provide good amount of protection and a fair helping of style at the same time!
On that note, by the way, specific types of clothing even better at naturally protecting you. Darker materials tend to absorb UV light, keeping it away from your skin, while tight weaves or knits can prevent the rays from penetrating too deeply to your skin. Clothes made of unbleached cotton or silk act in much the same way.

Both devices use concentrated sources of UV radiation, which they basically blast at your skin. It’s exactly as bad as it sounds, and it’s why they’re both known to cause serious long-term skin damage and contribute to skin cancer.
By a similar token, we’re not saying you shouldn’t enjoy the sunshine – especially since we get relatively little of it here in Blighty! It’s just a good plan to exercise a bit of caution when it comes to your skin, as it’s a bit more vulnerable in the summer months.
