How to treat winter acne breakouts

Winter is somewhat notorious for causing more frequent and severe acne breakouts than usual. We won’t go too much into the science behind it, but essentially the main factor is a drop in humidity, which can cause skin to dry out – resulting in acne breakouts. As experienced clinicians here at AP Skincare though, that’s exactly where we can help. We offer a number of skincare treatments in our skincare clinic in Blackburn, including a dedicated acne treatment – so if you’re struggling with breakouts this winter, here are a couple of things to try!

Is it worth trying over-the-counter solutions?

Absolutely – it’s always a good place to start, especially if your acne is relatively mild. Gels or creams containing Benzoyl peroxide can help – they’ll be available from your high-street pharmacist. The way they work is quite straightforward; essentially what they do is remove the blockage from the skin pores, and then initiate an anti-bacterial action.

Even the lower-end options contain some quite powerful active ingredients, so it’s best to take a cautious approach when using them for the first time. Opt for lower-strength variants initially – about 4% to 5% strength – and try them on a small area of skin first. If you don’t get great results, then you can start to consider whether it’s worth going up to 10%.

How can we help here at AP Skincare?

If you’re dealing with a more serious case of acne, we can offer a variety of solutions to help!

Lots of our acne treatments are based around our ZO Skincare range, which we can recommend as part of our acne treatment. These contain exceptionally powerful ingredients that excel at combating winter acne, including therapeutic levels of botanicals, enzymes and growth factors to help your skin protect and repair itself.

They’re only available from trained clinicians, including our team here at AP Skincare. While you can buy certain products whenever you’d like – such as our ZO exfoliating cleanser – other products such as our ZO complexion pads and clearing face masks are only available as part of a dedicated course of acne treatment, administered by one of our specialists.

Like many of our skincare treatments here at AP Skincare, our acne treatment course is tailored specifically to each individual patient. So when you choose us, one of the first things we’ll do is sit down with you to find out more about you and your skin. During this conversation, we may cover things like how your skin is affected by any general health conditions you’re dealing with, or any stress or environmental factors that could be playing a role.

If you’d like to find out more about any of our acne treatments – or indeed any of the skincare services we offer here at AP Skincare – don’t hesitate to take a look around our site!
