Our top 4 tips on how you can protect your skin from sun damage

Summer is just around the corner, so it’s time to get out and enjoy the warm weather. Whether you’re staying here in the UK, or planning on heading abroad for a much needed summer holiday, it’s always important not just to have fun, but also keep yourself safe. We all love a nice tan, but keep in mind that too much sun can be dangerous as well! Overly exposing your skin to sunlight can allow the harmful UV rays to penetrate through your epidermis to your inner layers of skin, your dermis, and your hypodermis. This effect commonly manifests itself as sunburn, which can lead to a variety of long term health problems if left untreated.

That’s why we’ve devised a list of tips here at AP Skincare on how you can protect your skin while you’re out enjoying the summer heat.

Skincare Products

Our skin protection solutions are widely recognised throughout the UK, and are packed with powerful active ingredients that help to maximise your skin’s protection against sun rays. They also give your skin a bit more breathing room to repair and protect itself, so you can preserve that youthful glow. We only provide the absolute best skincare products from top brands like Heliocare and ZO Skincare, and our clients can’t get enough of these simple, cost effective solutions.

Sun cream

This is likely the first thing that comes to mind when you’re thinking about what it is you need to take with you when heading out for a day in the sunshine. Sun cream gives your skin a line of defence against the harmful rays produced by the sun, and can be bought in differing strengths, depending on how easily your skin burns. You’ll know these as ‘factors’, ranging from factor 8, 15, 20 and so on, and most sun creams can be purchased with water resistant properties that will keep you protected even when you’re sweating or swimming.

Get some Shade

The sun is at its most intense between 10am and 4pm, so it’s important that you limit the amount of time you spend exposed to it between these hours! If you can feel your skin beginning to burn, find some shade and allow your skin to cool off for a bit. As a handy tip, practice the shadow rule: if your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are at their strongest, and you should probably find some shade!

Take your outfit into consideration

During this time of year, the natural thing to do is to dress in lighter, shorter clothing to avoid overheating in the sun. T-shirts, shorts, and knee-high dresses are all summer staples that we immediately opt for once the weather starts to warm up. Although these are definitely the most fashionable and effective ways to keep cool in the summer heat, they’re not always the best options for protecting you from the sun.

Instead, opt for baggy long sleeve shirts and pants that cover more of your body, and provide you with more of a comprehensive cover from the sun. As a side note, darker colours offer better protection from the sun than lighter colours, and the same goes for tightly woven fibres. In all honesty, we know that walking around in the sweltering heat in a fully black outfit isn’t exactly the most appealing idea. The main thing to take away is that it’s important to be find a good balanced, and be mindful of your choice of clothing, especially if you’ve already suffered from a bit of sunburn and need to cover up.
