There are lots of worries associated with adult braces, and sometimes, the anxiety is enough to put people off having treatment. That’s never good news for us at AP Smilecare, as we always put your oral health first. Everyone’s used to seeing children with braces, but let us assure you; there’s no reason why adults can’t benefit from the treatment too. In this week’s blog, we’re outlining some of the most common worries about adult braces, and why you shouldn’t let them stop you getting the treatment you need.
You’ve probably heard it said that an attractive smile helps in many areas of life, both in social and professional situations. With children, it’s the social areas that tend to be a concern, but adults have the professional side of things to contend with too. Lots of people put off treatment for fear that it will look unprofessional, and it can be especially intimidating for patients in client-facing roles. After all, appearance is a big factor in the workplace, and it’s one of the few areas in life where our appearance is actively regulated. So essentially, this worry makes a lot of sense!
The thing is though, between braces and bad teeth, there’s no question that bad teeth are the least preferable of the two. On the whole, many employers say that they would at least prefer to see people being proactive about their teeth, which you can easily argue comes under the appearance/hygiene standards of professional conduct. In short, it’s not unprofessional to have braces – quite the opposite!
As for social situations, there’s no denying some dental treatments can take a bit of getting used to – but trust us, the time you spend with braces will seem like the blink of an eye compared to the long years of a healthy, happy smile afterwards. What’s more, keeping your teeth clean is much easier when they’re straight, as you can more easily reach all surfaces evenly when they’re not crooked or overlapping.
If you’re still worried about getting adult braces, you’ll be pleased to hear there are plenty of options! Invisalign is specifically designed with this purpose in mind, in fact, so that you can get all the benefits of the treatment with none of the loss of self-confidence. It’s fast, too – generally the treatment lasts from anywhere between six to twelve months, but can even be as little as three. For example, they’re perfect if you’re preparing for a corporate event later in the year!
You’ve also got the option of Incognito lingual braces. These are fitted like normal braces except they go behind your teeth rather than over the front, so you be reassured of those same fantastic results without worrying about what people will think.
These are just a few of the options available – if you’re having trouble deciding between the two, or you want an expert opinion, we’re only too happy to help! Our team of dental professionals is on hand to assist with any questions, queries or concerns you might have, and we make it our mission to not only provide you with fantastic, long-lasting results, but also to put you completely at your ease!
