The top dos and don’ts of acne treatment

If you’re battling with acne prone skin, it can be hard to stay upbeat when your confidence is constantly being knocked by spots, blackheads and cysts.

For some, acne can be a mild inflammation that goes away after a couple of days, and for others it can feel like a horrible curse that’s plagued them since their high school days. Mild to severe acne can be a key contributor towards low moods, and low self-esteem. If you’ve been struggling with acne for a while now, we can help here at AP Skincare.

By providing your skin with the tools to self-regulate your oil production, we can reduce the problems of acne and return our skin back to health. Our natural acne treatments can be used from your teenage years onwards and we know they can help bring your skin confidence back. So with that in mind, here are our to top dos and don’ts of treating your skin for acne.

Washing your face

We’d always recommend that you wash your face with a mild cleanser and warm water combination twice a day. This is especially true if you’re someone who’s active, and spends a lot of time sweating. However, at the same time it’s important not to over-wash your face, as this can strip away the natural oils from your skin, leaving it feeling tight, red and dry. Once in the morning and once at night should be enough!

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows

It’s commonly assumed by many people that getting out in the sun can help to dry up your acne. This is true to an extent, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, there is some evidence that vitamin D (which you can get from the sun and certain foods) has antimicrobial properties and can help reduce inflammation. However, try not to get too carried away with this idea, as too much sun can put your skin at greater risk of sun damage, or worse, skin cancer. We’d also advise supplementing your vitamin D intake throughout the winter months, when sun exposure is limited (particularly here in the UK!).

You are what you eat

While consuming the odd chocolate bar and bacon butty probably won’t immediately cause your skin to break out in a wave of acne, an unhealthy diet has an undeniable impact on your skin. Sticking to a balanced diet that’s rich in lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, while keeping topped up with water throughout the day can help to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak. As a side note – increased milk consumption (especially skimmed milk) can worsen acne, so it might also be worth keeping tabs on your dairy intake.

Those are the main points covered!
