Root canal dentists in Blackburn

At AP Smilecare, we understand how worrying it can be when tooth pain starts to build and you’re not quite sure what’s going on. A root canal treatment is something we carry out when the inside of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, to remove the source of infection and help you keep your natural tooth for as long as possible.

You need a root canal when decay or damage has reached deeper into the tooth than a normal filling can treat. This doesn’t happen suddenly, it usually develops over time, often starting with a small cavity that hasn’t been treated or a tooth that has been weakened through injury or everyday wear. When bacteria reach the inside of the tooth, it can lead to pain and sensitivity that doesn’t settle on its own. At that point, a root canal is usually the most effective way to treat the infection and save the tooth.

We understand this is often the point where people start to feel a bit unsure about what the treatment involves. A dentist root canal procedure is a routine treatment we carry out every day. Our focus is always on keeping you comfortable throughout and doing everything possible to save the natural tooth rather than remove it.

What symptoms suggest you might need a root canal?

When a tooth becomes infected, the symptoms can vary, but there are a few common signs to look out for. Pain often starts off mild and intermittent, then becomes more noticeable and persistent over time. It may be triggered when biting or chewing, or when the tooth comes into contact with hot or cold food and drink, and the discomfort may linger rather than settle quickly once the trigger is removed.

You may also notice sensitivity that gradually worsens, particularly if it begins to affect everyday eating or drinking rather than just occasional moments of discomfort.

Other signs can include changes around the tooth and surrounding gum, such as:

  • tenderness or swelling in the gum near the affected tooth
  • visible redness or inflammation in the area
  • a tooth that starts to appear darker or discoloured compared to surrounding teeth
  • a bad taste in the mouth, which can sometimes be linked to infection

Not every case of pain or sensitivity will mean you need a root canal treatment. However, if your symptoms are persistent, worsening, or affecting daily your comfort, it’s important to have your tooth assessed properly so we can identify the cause early and prevent the problem from developing further.

Why teeth become infected in the first place

Most tooth infections develop gradually for several reasons. The most common cause is untreated decay. What starts as a small cavity can slowly work its way through the outer layers of the tooth until it reaches the inner pulp, where the nerve is. Once bacteria reach this point, the tissue becomes infected and can no longer recover on its own, at which point a dental root canal is needed.

In some cases, an infection can develop after a tooth has been damaged. This might be a visible crack or a break, or even a small fracture that isn’t obvious straight away. These tiny openings can allow bacteria to enter the tooth over time, and because the surface of the tooth can still look normal, the problem may not be picked up until your symptoms start.

There are also situations where infection can follow long-term wear or pressure on a tooth. Teeth that have been weakened over time, for example, through grinding or repeated stress, can become more vulnerable, making it easier for bacteria to reach the inner layers even without a clear cavity or injury. In all of these cases, a root canal treatment is used to remove the infection at the source, settle symptoms, and help preserve the natural tooth wherever possible.

Is a root canal treatment painful?

This is one of the most common worries people have before coming in, especially if they’re already dealing with tooth pain. A root canal is carried out under local anaesthetic, which numbs the tooth and surrounding area, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure itself. You may still feel some pressure or movement, but it should not be uncomfortable.

The worry around a painful root canal treatment usually comes from anxiety about what the procedure involves or things people may have heard from others. In reality, modern treatment is carried out with care and effective anaesthesia, and is designed to keep you comfortable throughout.

If your tooth is already infected or inflamed, it may feel sore or tender before you even come in, and that’s often what brings you to see a dentist for a root canal in the first place. Once we remove the source of the infection, the pressure and discomfort you’ve been dealing with can start to settle.

After a root canal treatment, it’s completely normal for the tooth to feel a little tender for a few days, especially when you’re biting or chewing on that side. As with any dental treatment, it shouldn’t be severe or unbearable, and the pain is usually mild and short-lived. Simple over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and paracetamol are effective for relieving discomfort.

Once the infection has been removed, the tooth can begin to heal properly, and most people find that things continue to improve over the following days. Overall, a root canal treatment is about taking away the source of the problem. It’s designed to settle pain, not add to it, and most people are surprised by how quickly things improve afterwards.
