AP Smilestars Programme

AP Smilestars Programme

The AP Smilestars supervised tooth brushing programme was launched in September 2022 and is being delivered by AP Smilecare on behalf of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council. Supervised tooth brushing is an evidence-based intervention which helps to prevent tooth decay; develop a healthy habit and improve children’s willingness to brush their teeth.

The AP Smilestars programme supports children aged 2–5 years at participating schools/pre-school settings within the borough to integrate tooth brushing into their daily routine.Teaching and support staff are trained to support children to follow our approved tooth brushing technique, whilst maintaining good hygiene. Each child is provided with their own toothbrush and toothpaste which are regularly replaced throughout the year.

AP Smilestars Programme

Historically Blackburn with Darwen had the highest rate of tooth decay in the country for children aged 2-5. The introduction of supervised tooth brushing along with other programmes as part of the Start Well scheme has led to an improvement in the overall oral health of children in nursery and early years settings within the borough.

In addition to delivering the supervised tooth brushing programme, AP Smilecare is providing oral health training and resources for organisations that come into contact with children and young people.
