Tooth sensitivity pain – what does it mean and when should you get help?

If you’ve ever felt a sharp jolt in your teeth while sipping a hot drink or biting into something cold, you’ll know just how unpleasant tooth sensitivity pain can be. At AP Smilecare, we’ve spoken to many patients who have experienced sensitivity, whether it’s a fleeting twinge or a constant ache. One of the most common questions we get, “Why are my teeth sensitive?”

Sensitivity is your tooth’s way of reacting when the protective outer layer (the enamel or gum covering) becomes compromised. This can leave the inner part of the tooth more exposed, making it vulnerable to changes in temperature, sweetness, or even touch. While the discomfort may come and go, it’s always worth having a dentist take a look because tooth sensitivity can be a sign of an underlying issue that needs attention. Like any dental issue, if left untreated, it can worsen over time.

What causes sensitive teeth pain?

There’s no single cause of sensitivity – in fact, several everyday habits and conditions can contribute. Brushing too hard, eating or drinking acidic food or drinks, or grinding your teeth (even unconsciously in your sleep) can all wear down your enamel. Gum recession, whether due to age, brushing technique or early gum disease, can also play a part by exposing the roots of your teeth, which aren’t protected by enamel at all and naturally are more sensitive.

Other triggers for sensitive tooth pain can include:

  • Hairline cracks in the tooth surface
  • Worn or loose fillings
  • Receding gums
  • Damage following tooth whitening
  • Recent dental treatment, such as fillings or crowns

Some people also experience tooth sensitivity after filling work, which is usually temporary but should still be monitored. Similarly, sensitive teeth after tooth whitening can happen if the treatment affects the enamel or causes irritation, but this, too, can usually be managed with the right advice and care.

Is tooth sensitivity something to worry about?

Tooth sensitivity is incredibly common – and in many cases, it’s easily treatable! That said, if you’ve noticed the pain becoming more frequent, more intense, or lasting longer than a few seconds, it’s best to book in for a check-up. Sensitivity can sometimes be a sign of decay, gum problems or even small fractures in the tooth, and spotting these early helps prevent more serious issues down the line.

Even if the pain doesn’t seem severe, it shouldn’t be something you just put up with. We’re here to help identify the sensitive teeth causes and offer tailored solutions so you can eat, drink and smile without hesitation.

What does tooth sensitivity treatment involve?

The right tooth sensitivity treatment depends on what’s behind the problem. In many cases, switching to a specialist toothpaste or adjusting your brushing habits can make a significant difference. We might also apply a protective fluoride varnish or use bonding materials to cover exposed areas and strengthen the enamel; it really depends!

If sensitivity is linked to a damaged filling or a developing cavity, we’ll recommend the right restorative treatment to fix the source of the pain. If you’re experiencing sensitivity after a whitening treatment or filling, we’ll check to make sure everything is healing as expected and provide you with advice to reduce the discomfort while things settle down.
