4 ways you may be accidentally harming your teeth
The secret to a great smile is great teeth and keeping your teeth in great shape is also vitally important […]
Read MoreIf you’ve tried to find an NHS dentist recently and aren’t having any luck, or you’ve been waiting longer than you expected for a routine appointment, you’re certainly not alone. Many patients across the UK are finding that accessing NHS dental care isn’t as straightforward as it once was, and we completely understand how frustrating that can be.
Looking after your smile is important, and the last thing anyone wants is to feel like getting a dental appointment is a challenge. While we continue to provide NHS care for our patients, changes within NHS dentistry mean the way appointments are managed has had to adapt.
As your Blackburn dental team, we want to explain why this is happening and what’s changed within NHS dentistry. While these changes have been introduced to help prioritise patients who need care most urgently, they have also affected how often routine appointments are available and how practices manage their NHS capacity.
The biggest challenge facing NHS dentistry is that there is currently more demand for appointments than there is capacity available. Every NHS dental practice works within a contract that sets out how much NHS care they can provide. This means there is a limit to the number of NHS appointments available, even when there are more patients looking for care.
For dental practices, this can make it challenging to balance the needs of existing patients, urgent cases, and routine appointments. We want to make sure every patient receives the time, attention and quality of care they deserve, but the number of NHS appointments available is not unlimited.
One of the questions we’re asked most often is why it can be so hard to find an NHS dentist accepting new patients. Unlike GP practices, dental practices don’t have a fixed list of NHS patients they can simply add to. Instead, practices can only take on additional NHS patients when they have enough availability within their NHS contract.
When a practice has reached its NHS capacity, it may need to pause taking on new patients. This is why many people find themselves contacting several practices, joining waiting lists or checking back regularly to see whether spaces have become available.
We know this can be disappointing, especially when you’re trying to be proactive about looking after your smile, but there are other avenues worth exploring, like private dentistry.
Many patients expect to see their dentist every six months. However, current NICE guidance recommends that NHS recall intervals should be tailored to each patient’s individual oral health needs and level of risk.
Rather than everyone automatically having the same recall period, dentists now consider factors such as your dental history, your risk of developing problems and the health of your teeth and gums when deciding how often you need to attend.
For some patients with a healthy smile, this may mean longer gaps between routine appointments. This approach then allows dental teams to focus more closely on patients who need extra support, but it can also mean fewer routine appointment slots are available for those who would prefer to be seen more frequently.
We all know how stressful it can be when you’re in dental pain and need help quickly. Ensuring patients with urgent problems can access care is a really important part of NHS dentistry, which is why the appointment system has been restructured to ensure capacity for emergency appointments.
Dental practices are now required to protect a proportion of their NHS appointment capacity for emergency care. This helps patients who need immediate treatment, but it means fewer spaces are available for routine check-ups and preventive appointments. It’s a balance that dental teams across the country are working hard to manage.
While waiting for an appointment can be frustrating, there are still things you can do at home to help protect your teeth and gums. A good daily routine is one of the best ways to maintain your oral health. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes, and being mindful of how often you have sugary foods and drinks can all help reduce your risk of developing problems.
It’s also worth keeping an eye out for any changes in your mouth. If you notice persistent pain, swelling, bleeding gums, a loose tooth or anything that feels unusual, it’s important to speak to a dentist as soon as possible rather than waiting for a routine appointment, as these symptoms may require more urgent attention. Looking after your smile between appointments helps give your dentist the best chance of keeping your teeth healthy when you are next seen.
We understand that NHS dentistry is the preferred choice for many patients, and we’re committed to continuing to provide NHS care wherever possible. However, we also recognise that the current challenges within NHS dentistry don’t work for everyone.
For some patients, the main priority is having more flexibility around appointments, being able to see their dentist sooner or having more choice over their ongoing care. In these situations, private dentistry can provide an alternative option that gives you more control over when and how you access dental treatment.
As a private dentist in Blackburn, we can offer a more flexible approach through our Denplan services, with greater appointment availability and more time during visits to discuss your concerns, answer questions, and focus on your individual oral health goals.
It can also provide access to a wider range of treatment options, particularly if you’re looking for treatments that go beyond essential NHS care or if you would like to explore ways to improve your smile.
Choosing private dental care is a personal decision, and we understand it won’t be the right option for everyone. Our team is always happy to talk through the different choices available, explain the benefits and help you decide what works best for your needs, lifestyle and budget.
