Read MoreThere’s lots to love about autumn, from the crisp air to the golden leaves – and of course, we all love to indulge in those distinctive comforting drinks that warm us from the inside out. But like all good things, they need to be consumed in moderation, as they can potentially have a significant impact on your dental health. We offer a wide variety of dental treatments here at AP Smilecare, so we’re no strangers to the effects to keep an eye on – here are some of this season’s biggest culprits!
The spiced chai latte is a staple during the cooler months. Made with a blend of black tea, spices like cinnamon and cardamom, and creamy milk, this delightful drink offers a brilliant combination of warmth and flavour. While it’s an inviting choice for chilly evenings, it does present a small risk – most of it down to tannins. Tannins are a type of polyphenol which can stick to the enamel of your teeth, making them more prone to stains. They’re highly concentrated in black tea, which can lead to discolouration over time.
To enjoy your chai latte while minimising staining, it’s a good idea to try rinsing your mouth with water after drinking. This simple step can help wash away some of the tea’s residue. Plus using a straw can help to reduce contact with your teeth, keeping them a little whiter.
A traditional festive favourite, mulled wine is a warm alcoholic treat that often features red wine, spices, and fruits such as oranges and cloves. The rich, deep colour of red wine is one of the elements that makes the sweet spiciness of mulled wine quite so inviting – but unfortunately, that’s also what gives it its staining abilities. The pigments in red wine, combined with its acidity, can erode enamel and lead to unsightly stains.
If you enjoy a good cup of mulled wine during autumn gatherings (and let’s be honest, most of us do!), then again it’s generally a good idea to follow it up with water as it can help mitigate the effects of staining. Alternatively, consider snacking on crunchy foods like apples or carrots. Not only do they help to clean your teeth naturally, but they also stimulate saliva production, which can further assist in maintaining your dental health.
When autumn arrives, the pumpkin spice latte becomes an instant classic. It really captures the essence of the season with its mix of espresso, steamed milk, pumpkin puree, and a blend of warm spices,. However, while it is undeniably delicious, the combination of coffee and sugar can contribute to dental staining.
Coffee is known for its acidity and can lead to the weakening of enamel, making your teeth more susceptible to stains from the added spices and pumpkin. To enjoy your pumpkin spice latte without worrying too much about your smile, try choosing a smaller size and fewer pumps of syrup.
Ah, another go-to favourite. There’s something inherently comforting about a steaming mug of hot chocolate, especially as the days grow colder. Whether you prefer the classic version or a gourmet twist with dark chocolate or added flavourings like peppermint, this drink can be a delightful treat. However, depending on the type of chocolate used, it can also lead to discolouration.
Darker chocolates tend to have more staining potential due to their higher cocoa content. Any added sugars or syrups can also make things slightly worse by creating an environment where stains are more likely to adhere to your teeth. To enjoy hot chocolate while keeping your dental health in check, you might want to consider using a lighter chocolate or making it at home with minimal sugar. And – you know the drill by now – following up with water or chewing on crunchy fruits after drinking can also help maintain a bright smile.
