4 ways you may be accidentally harming your teeth
The secret to a great smile is great teeth and keeping your teeth in great shape is also vitally important […]
Read MoreIt’s fair to say that the weather hasn’t been the brightest in the UK this summer, so if you’re planning on jetting off on holiday any time soon, you’re probably looking forward to it! No wonder – it’s a brilliant, well-deserved chance to relax and enjoy yourself. And a bit of holiday indulgence never went amiss (it’s half the point, after all), but at the same time, your dental health never stops being important, even during a break in your normal routine. We know that as well as anyone with all our years of experience in first-class dental treatments here at AP Smilecare – so here are our top tips to help you keep your teeth squeaky clean while you’re away!
When packing for your holiday, the right dental products can make all the difference. Many brands offer travel-friendly versions of their products that are just as effective as the full-sized ones, so pick a travel-sized toothpaste and a compact toothbrush that fits easily in your bag.
Don’t forget to pack a small bottle of mouthwash to keep your breath fresh throughout the day. If you’re using dental floss, consider taking a floss pick or travel-sized floss dispenser for convenience. When it comes to toothpaste actually, look for a tube that contains fluoride, as it helps strengthen enamel and protect against cavities. And of course, remember to check any airline regulations for liquid sizes if you’re flying, to avoid having to leave essential items behind.
Maintaining your brushing and flossing routine while travelling might require some adjustments. Even though your routine might well be a lot more irregular, you should still ideally aim to brush your teeth at least twice a day, ideally after meals. If you’re staying in accommodation without a sink, keep a bottle of water and a cup handy for rinsing.
Flossing is equally important, so ensure you use it daily to remove plaque and food particles that brushing alone might miss. If you find yourself in a situation where you can’t floss, consider carrying floss picks or interdental brushes that are easy to use on the go. A portable toothbrush sanitiser or rinsing solution is useful if you can keep one with you, as it’ll help you to keep your toothbrush clean and free from bacteria. If you’re in a country with different water quality, bottled water is a good option for brushing your teeth to avoid any potential issues with tap water.
Let’s be honest, snacking while travelling is almost inevitable – but choosing the right snacks can help protect your teeth. So, go for snacks that are low in sugar and high in nutrients. Fresh fruits and vegetables (such as apples, carrots, and celery) are great choices because they stimulate saliva production, which helps to neutralise harmful acids. Cheese is another excellent option, as it contains calcium and phosphates that strengthen tooth enamel.
Ideally, avoid sugary treats and sticky snacks that can cling to your teeth and contribute to plaque buildup. In addition, drink plenty of water throughout the day to help wash away food particles and maintain optimal oral health. If you’re indulging in local delicacies, try to brush or rinse your mouth soon after to minimise the impact of any sugar or acid content.
In an ideal case scenario you’ll never need it, but it’s still wise to be prepared for dental emergencies while travelling. As a tourist, your access to healthcare will be different compared to native citizens of your chosen destination, so it’s a good plan to sit down and do a bit of research about how you’ll be able to interact with the country’s healthcare system – including what you’re entitled to, what you’ll be blocked from, and what you’ll be able to buy access to. This is where private medical insurance can often come in handy!
Research dental clinics in your destination beforehand and keep their contact information handy. Many countries have private dental practices that offer emergency services, so finding help shouldn’t be too difficult.
It’s also worth considering carrying a small dental emergency kit with basic supplies like pain relief medication and temporary dental repair kits, which can be a lifesaver if you encounter a dental issue. Additionally, check if your travel insurance covers dental emergencies and keep a copy of your insurance policy and emergency contact numbers with you. Familiarising yourself with the local healthcare system and any language barriers can also be beneficial in a pinch.
Once you’re back from your holiday, don’t forget to book a dental check-up. Even if you’ve been diligent with your oral hygiene, it’s a good idea to have your teeth examined to ensure everything is in order. A professional check-up can help identify any issues that may have developed during your trip and address them before they become more serious problems. Regular dental visits are essential for maintaining long-term oral health and ensuring your teeth remain in top condition. Make a note to discuss any changes in your oral health or any discomfort you may have experienced while away. Early detection and treatment can prevent more significant issues and ensure you start your next adventure with a healthy smile.
