Our top 4 aftercare tips for non-surgical facelifts

Non-surgical facelifts are one of our most popular skincare treatments here at AP Skincare, and we have decades of experience in using them to help get the very best results for our clients. Of course, the most pivotal work happens during the course of the procedure itself – but equally, it can be easy to underestimate how crucial the aftercare is too. Taking the right steps to protect your skin in the time immediately following the procedure can make all the difference to the quality of your final results. Here are the four most important things to bear in mind!

Avoid touching or massaging the affected areas

As you may have learned during the pandemic, this is more difficult than it seems! Thankfully though, it’s not something you need to worry about indefinitely – generally, it’s just in the first 24hr-48hr period immediately following your procedure. You’ll need to take particular care to avoid massaging, poking or rubbing the affected area.

This is mainly because it poses the risk of spreading of injected material to unintended areas of your face, like your eyes. Your skin is also more sensitive after a procedure and it can be prone to more swelling, bruising and inflammation – all of which can be annoying in the short term, and maybe even affect the quality of your results in the long term. It’s tricky, but it’s worth doing.

Protect your skin from the sun

The treatment can make your skin a little more sensitive than usual for a short time, and sunlight is one of the biggest threats to its overall condition. Whether you’re protecting your skin through sunscreen, covering up, or just staying inside, protecting your skin sufficiently can help you avoid the temporary risks of hyperpigmentation, which can leave you with an uneven skin tone.

Sun exposure can dilate your blood vessels and increases blood flow to the skin, thereby also exacerbating swelling and bruising – both common side effects of facial procedures for a short time. And of course, minimising your general sun exposure can help promote your skin’s healing rate, which is important after any kind of skincare procedure.

Maintain a generally healthy lifestyle

The hectic pace of modern life means that maintaining a generally healthy lifestyle is something that can often be a challenge at the best of times, but it’s particularly crucial after a non-surgical facelift. That means all the usual staples – maintaining a good diet, doing enough regular exercise, and crucially, getting enough sleep. There’s a lot of science behind it, but the very short version is that everything that’s good for your body as a whole also has direct benefits for your skin. If you’re rested, getting all the nutrients you need to, and staying active, it all keeps your body performing at peak condition, which promotes general healing, and specifically benefits your skin after a facial procedure.

Follow specific guidance from your skincare practitioner

Now, obviously everything we’ve outlined above so far is fairly universal, and so good advice to follow in general. You may also find that your skincare practitioner, or another member of the team, gives you tailored skincare advice that you’ll need to bear in mind for the hours, days or weeks following your procedure. If that happens, it’s crucial to make note of it at the time, and stick to it for the advised period of time.

This advice may include any or all of the following: avoiding strenuous exercise, using cold compresses, applying prescribed topical treatments, or even certain over-the-counter medications. It may seem like a bit of a pain to follow in the short term, but it’s all done in the interests of getting you the best results!

And of course if you’ve ever got any questions or need any advice about any of our non-surgical facelifts, or indeed any of our treatments, then we’re only too happy to help here at AP Skincare.
